Questions
Balikbayan box questions, answered.
Rates, sizes, what you can pack, pickup in Northern California, transit time and Christmas deadlines.
- What is a balikbayan box?
- A balikbayan box is a large double-wall corrugated box that Filipinos overseas fill with gifts and household goods and ship door-to-door to family in the Philippines. Atlas Shippers has been sending them from Northern California since 1993 — you pay one flat door-to-door rate for the whole box, not by the pound.
- What are the Atlas balikbayan box dimensions?
- Macho is 24 x 18 x 24 inches, Regular is 23 x 17 x 20 inches and Junior is 18 x 8 x 8 inches. Our airline-compliant Travel Boxes (pink or blue) are sized to fit standard checked-baggage requirements. Macho is the most popular size.
- What should I include in a balikbayan box?
- Clothing, shoes, canned and packaged food, toiletries, school supplies, small appliances, toys and personal gifts are all fine. Do not pack cash, jewelry, firearms, ammunition, aerosols, flammable liquids, live plants or perishable food. Balikbayan boxes of personal effects sent by a qualified Filipino are generally duty and tax exempt under Philippine customs rules.
- Where can I buy or get balikbayan boxes near me?
- Order boxes online and we deliver them to your home anywhere in Northern California, or pick them up free at our Livermore warehouse or any authorized Atlas drop-off agent — San Jose, Daly City, Vacaville, Roseville, Pacifica, Bakersfield and more.
- How do I label a balikbayan box?
- Every Atlas box has a printed sender and recipient panel. Write your full name and Northern California phone number in the sender block, then the recipient's complete name, house number, street, barangay, city or municipality, province, ZIP code and two contact numbers. Seal all seams with packing tape and keep your transaction number for tracking.
- How do I track my Atlas Shippers balikbayan box?
- Enter the transaction number from your booking confirmation or receipt on our tracking page. You will see each milestone — warehouse scan, container loading, sailing, Philippine customs clearance and door-to-door delivery.
- How long does shipping to the Philippines take?
- Boxes picked up in Northern California typically arrive at the recipient's door in roughly 6 to 8 weeks depending on the sailing schedule and the destination province. Metro Manila and Luzon are usually fastest; remote island barangays take a little longer.
- Is pick-up in Northern California really free?
- Yes. Empty box drop-off and home pick-up are free across the Bay Area, Sacramento Valley and Central Valley. Call 1-800-285-2797 or book a pick-up online and we will confirm your date.
- How much is a balikbayan box to the Philippines?
- Atlas charges one flat door-to-door rate per box based on size and destination zone, not by weight, so you can fill a Macho or Regular box completely. Call 1-800-285-2797 or 408-784-0546 for the current balikbayan box rates from California to your recipient's province.
- When should I send a balikbayan box for Christmas?
- Send by early to mid September for a comfortable Christmas arrival. Sea cargo from California runs about 6 to 8 weeks and December is the busiest season at Philippine ports, so booking your pickup early is the safest way to have the box under the tree.
